Weekly Update from Pastor Phil

We’re watching the drizzle left from the massive Hurricane Irma that slammed several Caribbean islands and Florida, leaving a trail of great needs. Let’s keep these folks in prayer and use opportunity to serve them through our financial gifts and in possibly other tangible ways. Among the many good opportunities to give, I’d recommend Baptist Global Response (BGR) and the North American Mission Board (NAMB).

It’s great to be back after preaching in chapel for Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and then visiting with Chris & Lauren Spano and Trinity Community Church in Bowie, MD, as well as visiting with our sons in the DC area. Karen and I drove a lot of miles, saw extraordinarily beautiful landscape and small towns, and ate some delicious seafood. I must admit that I sampled crab cakes from North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. They were all superb!

We are just a few weeks away from the National Founders Conference, October 3–5 at South Woods in Memphis. Have you made plans to join us for this time as we consider “Reformation Truth: Now and Forever”? You can register at http://www.founders.org. It would be wonderful to have you joining us for this time of worship, rich fellowship, and spiritual feasting on the Word.

We get started tomorrow night with a new STINT series that considers “Characters of the Reformation.” I’ll get us started during that first session by looking at some that the Lord raised up even a couple hundred years before the Great Reformation to lay groundwork for that massive spiritual awakening. Join us at 6:30 as we think about our evangelical heritage.

Children’s choir gets started tomorrow night too! We are excited about our kids learning to sing together such incredibly beautiful songs of the faith! Thanks so much to those leading this time of training the children. The impact will be felt for decades to come!

We returned to our Sunday evening services this past Sunday night with Steve Runer expounding John 14:1–6. Drew Harris will be preaching this coming Sunday, as we continue looking at the Upper Room Discourse (John 13–16). Here will be a wonderful opportunity to think together on the last teaching of Jesus to His followers just before His crucifixion.

Our Membership Classes get started during Sunday School on October 1st and run for four weeks. If you’re interested in knowing more about membership at South Woods, this will be the place to best do it. Our elders will be leading out in this time as we consider the gospel, our church’s history, our doctrinal convictions, our polity, what we believe about the local church, and mission and ministry opportunities through our church.

The Ladies have their annual Kick-Off Sunday on September 17th. They’ve been making plans for the year ahead, so come and find out opportunities for fellowship, growth, learning, and service. They will meet at 9:00 a.m. in the fellowship hall.

I loved meditating on Psalm 24 in preparation for preaching on Sunday. I worshiped during the preparation time—which, by the way, is certainly a goal each week in preparation. It seems that the Lord helped us to think more of His Story as we pondered this psalm together. I hope that you will find this message to be encouraging.
