Animosity Toward the Gospel
Acts 14:1-7
March 30, 1997
I. The nature of the Gospel does not allow neutrality
1. Some believe (v. 1)
Consider the gospel message: 13:28-39(37-39)
Consider the work of the Holy Spirit (13:48)
2. Some disbelieve (v. 2)
This is not a neutral, passive term. While obedience accompanies growth, disobedience accompanies unbelief.
Outright rejection of the gospel:
- Denial of one's own need (and one's depravity)
- Denial of the nature of God
- Denial of the warnings of God
- Rejection of God's offer in the gospel
- Ultimately, a rejection of the need for the Redeemer
1. Unbelief likes company
Note that Jews were coming together with Gentiles over rejecting the gospel.
e.g. Some of the greatest persecutions of Christians started small and grew to mammoth proportions (French Huguenots - from 20-25% of the population to less than 0.5% ).
2. Unbelief unchecked turns ugly (v. 2)
"...embittered them against the brethren," "to make evil, to injure, to irritate" "poisoned the minds;" strong, passionate words;
This can cover the gamut:
- Mild opposition
- Rumors (which was what began in Iconium with the stirring up and embittered actions)
- Silencing, humiliation v. 5
- Riddance - stone them
Truth divides v. 4; we need not be surprised: this is man acting according to his nature without regard to common grace.
In spite of opposition, we must be bold to proclaim God's truth in Christ. Because that is precisely what sinners need.
1. Right manner (v. 3)
Proclaim boldly, with reliance upon the Lord (note what the Lord did; He will vindicate His Word proclaimed), with a clear message v.3, 7.
2. Regular opportunities (v. 6-7)
Wherever you are planted (or moved) is the right spot!
