II. Missionary Practice

1. Train leaders (vv. 1-3)

a. Good reputation, "well-spoken of;" to be approved.

b. Solid faith, quote II Timothy 1:5

c. Concessions: Why did he circumcise Timothy in light of the decrees he was preaching? "What

    was unnecessary for acceptance of God was advisable for acceptance by some human beings"

    (Stott 254). "Paul was a reed in non-essentials - an iron pillar in essentials" (John Newton in

    Stott 257).

2. Preach doctrine (v. 4)

Dogma that had been decided on (perfect passive - permanent). The content of decrees essentially outlined the gospel and practices of faith. This was no time for giving quaint opinions.

3. Strengthen churches (v. 5)

III. Missionary Advance

1. A simple principle (vv. 6-7)

If there is no clear-cut direction, press forward as you desire with all sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. "Trying" in v. 7 is imperfect so it is a repeated action.

2. A distinct call (vv. 9-10)

"Concluded," a present participle, "to put together." A bit different from the somewhat cocky "I know, God told me." This implies that they considered all factors and arrived at a distinct, intelligent decision.

3. A certain message (v. 10)
