The Impact of God's Word

Acts 17:1-15

August 17, 1997

I. The Message

Apostolic methodology in proclamation:  "Reasoned with them from the Scriptures"

1. Methods in proclamation

Greek - to involve in the mind, often implied in a question and answer approach: could suggest a discourse - Pauline fashion was to ask questions that answer starting with generalities upon which all might agree, then working toward the particulars.  This word always implies intellectual stimulus when used.

a. An appeal to the mind

This is contrary to many prevalent methods that are filled with fluff, not content, in order to appeal to the emotions or feelings.  Thus you have stories and illustrations replacing the exposition of Scripture, "stories are the sermon" (Bryson).

b. An opening of the texts of Scripture, precisely what is taking place in exposition.  The present participle shows that this was an ongoing practice.

c. Letting Scripture interpret Scripture, to place alongside, to present evidence; here the bringing forward in proof passages of Scripture.

d. A solid, unbending message, "had to" or "it was necessary."  Paul did not give multiple options.

E.g. I had someone tell me that my preaching was different than what she was accustomed because I did not give any options.

e. The essential elements of the gospel v. 3.

f. Proclamation

Greek - announce as an official messenger or emissary of the king.  It is authoritative proclamation.  It is vital proclamation.  It is needed proclamation.

2. Manner in hearing

a. Consistency v. 2:  3 Sabbaths

b. Persuasion v. 4: to become convinced so that it leads to action. Berea

c. Openness to the Word v. 11

d. Eagerness or "willingness" v. 11

e. Careful examination v. 11

f. Verification v. 11

II. The Response

1. Receive the Word v. 4, 12

a. Affects the mind

b. Directs the will

c. Opens the heart

d. Fills the life

2.      Reject the Word

a. Jealousy v. 5

b. Influence others v. 5

c. Accusations/exaggeration v. 6

d. Irritation v. 8, 13

e. Elimination v. 13
