Spiritual Disciplines

Acts 20:32-38

February 22, 1998

 

I. Realize in whose hands you rest 

- Problem of self-determination, self-dependence

- To "commend" is to place before.  It is in the constancy of nurturing this relationship that we are 

   able to face the demands of life (pastoral sense:  knowing that our limitations cannot do all we 

   desire)

II. Live in the Word 

- "Word of His grace" refers specifically to all of the truth related to the gospel.

- We must never get away from the gospel.

- We must never think we are too mature for it.

It is able, or powerfully able to ...

 

1. It builds - as in constructing a house; step by step, slow process, every part is necessary

 

2. It gives the gospel inheritance - all of the riches of grace that are ours in Christ can be found in the Word of grace.  As we live in its truth we discover more of our inheritance in Christ.

 

III. Be content (v. 33) 

- Live in contentment

- Coveting kills our focus and passion for the things of God.  It robs us of a thankful and joyful spirit.

Contentment means:

 

1. We find our great satisfaction in the Lord

 

2. In what He provides for us

 

3. And we don't allow the pursuit of things or pleasures or position to become our passion (Philippians 4:10-13)

 

IV. Be generous (vv. 34-35)

 

Generosity has a two-pronged appeal:

 

1. Realize that you are not an island; there are others for whom you have been entrusted to serve and help.  Keep your eyes open for them.

 

2. Hard work provides the substance for being generous.  Work is not just to accumulate things.

"Work of weariness" - set our attention on giving rather than receiving.

 

V. Demonstrate your love for the brethren

 

1. Praying

 

2. Affection
