The Appeal to Caesar
Acts 25
June 7, 1998
It is impossible to ignore Christianity in society. It creates such radical changes in its adherents, that it cannot be forgotten.
I. The Lord's Sovereignty
1. Festus protects Paul from Jewish plot
Ambush thwarted. Contrast with Felix and his "daggerman" type rule and Festus' integrity as ruler. Festus understood Paul's innocence. Paul was kept in prison by two prosecutors who wanted to carry Jewish favor. It was actually the safest place for Paul at that point.
3 Stages of Roman justice:
(1) Charges formulated and sustained by prosecutor
(2) Formal accusation by interested party
(3) Case heard by head of the imperium in person
2. Caesar (Nero) was more benevolent at this point
Under Seneca's influence (Nero's "Golden Years") the right of appeal was available.
3. Festus' curiosity aroused
He had other prisoners, but was curious about one. Opportunity of gospel witness. Festus was dead 2 years later.
II. The Apostle's Dignity
1. Calm response (v. 8)
No tirade nor hatred shown; no contempt for Romans' threefold charges in v. 8; his defense was continual vindication.
Matthew 5:11-12
2. Discernment (v. 9)
Jews were certainly laying a trap; Paul saw this and stood his ground. He
was well within his rights as a Roman. Jews did not have right to put to death any who desecrated their temple, so they sought a Jerusalem venue. Even freedom for Paul was a sure death warrant at this point.
4. Courage (vv. 10-11)
Willing to face justice - I Peter 2:15; 4:12-16
To Rome:
a. Appealed to save his life
b. Would bring him to Rome as Christ foretold
c. Preach gospel to Nero's entourage and perhaps receive official recognition of Christianity (Stott)
III. The Gospel's Continuity
1. Gospel threats
There will always be attempts to silence the gospel because it infuriates natural man and contradicts natural religion.
2. Gospel thrusts
Ominous situations often end with greater increase
