God's Deliverance
I Samuel 23-24

Unwitting part of the Philistines

(1)   vv. 1-5 Displaying David's kingship.

(2)   Vv. 19-29 Diverting Saul from a certain capture of David.  God can use whomever and whatever He pleases.  The design of deliverance or provision belongs to the Lord.  (See Psalm 54; illustration from Davis 100-101 on Alexander Peden)

Unique part of the ephod vv. 6-14

            (explain ephod and its significance)

(1)   Saul's treachery drove Abiathar to David and with him, the ephod.

(2)   Pertinent questions of God v. 11-12

(3)   Direct guidance for God's anointed: a) ask, b) seek if Scripture addressed it, c) wait in sensitivity to the Lord.

(4)   The issue of providence v. 14b; Psalm 32:7, 37:12-15.

Timely visit by Jonathan vv. 15-23

(1)   David's sense of fear, despair v. 15

(2)   An unusual confirmation v. 17

(3)   The real focus v. 16 "encouraged him in God."  The last meeting of these two friends left David re-focused upon the Lord.  Is this not what true friendship should aim for?
