An Enduring House
II Samuel 7:1-17
December 3, 2000

I. Noble Intentions

Verses 2-3 But...(version of regulative principle)

1. It is necessary? Verses 5-6, does God need this?  May have been some issue of legitimizing his throne as omnipresent and immanent

2. Has God commanded it?  Verse 7, We need not be novel in our Christian faith.  Ours is a religion of obedience to divine revelation.

II. Divine Reminder

1.David, though king, is God's servant v. 8

Greatness is not found in self-assertion or power but in humble service.  Example:  Uzziah - leprosy; Hezekiah - short heritage.

2. David must remember his calling v. 8

Grace, humility, purpose, yieldedness.

3.   David must recall the Lord's presence v. 9a

(with Goliath, Saul, Philistines, Amalakites)

III. Divine Promise

Opposite action toward a god was true in other religions:  act for the god and he will act for you.  But here is grace at work!

1. Great name v. 9b

Constant reference to David's kingship; continuity between 1000-400B.C. of David's family (even in Egypt a long dynasty was 100 years; longest was 18th dynasty of Egypt...250 years.

2. A place for Israel v. 10-11a

600 years  - deliverance from Egyptians, Assyrians

3. Deliverance from enemies v. 11b

4. A dynasty for David 11c

5. A promise for his heir v. 12-15

If Solomon's writings show the stages of life, then he made return by Ecclesiastes.  No more "if."  "This is a powerful, clear articulation of justification by grace...in which the "works" of David or Israel are not decisive.  God loves unconditionally" (Walter Bruggeman).

Promises:  an heir, the temple to be built, God will father him (including correction).

6. An eternal promise - Messiah v. 16

Matthew 1:20-23; Matthew 2: 5-6 (Micah); Luke 1:26-33 (especially 32-33); Luke 3:23, 31 (Mary's genealogy - Nathan); Matthew 1:6, 16 (Joseph's genealogy - Solomon ended with Zedekiah).
